Fundraising success to help homeless care leavers in the Midlands

Droitwich Spa charity, the Rees Foundation, is celebrating a huge fundraising success achieved with the help of Worcestershire based property developers Barberry Group Ltd.

The funds will enable the charity to continue supporting care leavers into accommodation and helping them manage a tenancy as well as support them in finding employment.

Barberry Group picked the foundation as their ‘chosen charity’ for the year in 2023 and are keen to help adults who have experienced childhood trauma who often leave care with little or no support.

The Rees Foundation was set up by Jan Rees OBE in 2013, a former foster carer, who had a vision to provide a support network for people leaving care. The foundation has properties in Kidderminster, Bromsgrove, and Redditch where care leavers can apply to be housed as part of the charity’s housing and support project.

Michael is one of the tenants currently living in Rees supported accommodation. “I’ve been with Rees for over two years, before this I was in hostels and prison. Rees gave me the chance for a new start with the flat and my own tenancy. Before this I’d always been in the wrong place with the wrong crowd.

“I’d used drugs for years and things were bad with my family. Since I’ve had the flat, I’ve felt safe, comfortable and happy. I’ve not used any drugs; I’ve not been in trouble with the police.

“I feel like my life is more stable now and that I make better choices. For the first time in a long time I am in a relationship and things are good.“

Barberry who won several prestigious awards in the property sector in recent years held a number of fundraising events throughout 2023 to mark their 40th anniversary. Executive Chairman Jon Bellfield said: “I am delighted the money raised this year will present many more opportunities for care leavers.

“The work the Rees Foundation do is vital to improve the lives of those who have experienced trauma throughout their lives and have no one to turn to. To know the money Barberry has raised will help more people like Michael is fantastic.”
